Important and Useful Information for the Steggles House
Arriving and Leaving
When you first arrive at the house, be sure to do the following as soon as you get in:
- Go to the electric panel in the Laundry Room (next to the kitchen). When you look at the panel, you’ll see two main grey colored panels and one brown panel below it. You don’t need to do anything with the grey panels, only the brown one. Switch the following breaker circuits to ON:
- Well Pump
- Water Heater (2 of them)
NOTE: All the circuits on the (lower) brown box should be set to ON.
- Switch the thermostat next to the entrance to the Laundry Room up to about 68 or whatever is comfortable.
- Switch the thermostat in the room above the garage which is on the wall by the door leading to the garage, to the desired temperature also (this is the only room which is not heated by the gas central air heating – instead it is heated with baseboard heat).
When you leave, be sure to do the opposite:
- Switch the breaker for the Well Pump and the two water heater’s to OFF.
- Set the thermostat’s for the house, bedroom above the garage and also the master bedroom to 55 degrees.
- Remember to return the key into the lockbox on the front door (so the next person can get in).
Master Bedroom
There is a gas fireplace in the master bedroom. To turn the fireplace on, simply adjust the thermostat on the opposite wall next to the bathroom. As long as you switch the thermostat to a higher setting than the room is currently at, it will automatically come on and then switch off when the temperature is reached.
Master Bathroom
The master bathroom is an “air” Jacuzzi bath. This means that it doesn’t pump water around the bath it blows air into the bath. Because of this technology you don’t have to worry about switching the pump on when there is not enough water in the bath (you can switch it on even if there is no water in the bath, it won’t hurt the pump system). The bath tries to automatically blow any residual water out of the pumps a few minutes after the pump has been switched on. So after you’ve emptied the bath and gone into the bedroom, don’t be surprise if it suddenly switches on for about 30 seconds – it is supposed to do this.
Laundry Room
Both the washer and dryer are new, high performance GE appliances. The operation should be self explanatory, but be careful not to sprinkle washing power on top of the clothes, instead, put half the clothes in, then pour/sprinkle the power on the clothes and then put the remaining clothes in. If you put the powder on the top, for some reason it doesn’t seem to dissolve properly and you end up with power marks. I always select the “second rinse” option when doing a wash also.
Kitchen
Everything in the kitchen should be self-explanatory. The only word of caution is to do with the gas range. A past visitor cleaned the range and put the ignition caps on the wrong burners (put a small cap on a big burner). This can be dangerous as the flames can shoot straight up.
Stereo
The stereo uses an amplifier which is below it (to the left of the fireplace). Be sure that the “Speakers A and B” are left selected. If you do not hear any sound, make sure that both the cd player and the amplifier are switched on and then try turning the big dial which changes the input mode. It should work if it is switched to “CD Player” as the input mode. It takes about 3 or 4 seconds for sound to come out of the speakers after selecting this. The stereo is also wired up to the deck speakers via a volume control which is located on the great room wall to the deck (by the door to the master bedroom). Please remember to switch the outside speakers off when you come in side. Also, please don’t have the music too loud outside so you don’t disturb the neighbors.
TV/DVD/X-Box and Karaoke Machine
The tv channels are controlled through the cable box. The cable box has a silver remote control. If you want to use the X-Box, plug the audio/video cables into the front bottom right corner of the TV. Then press the button on the top of the TV to change input modes i.e. from the “Cable TV” input to the “GAME” input.
To play a DVD, put the dvd in the top dvd player which is to the left of the fireplace. Don’t use the multi-cd/dvd player as this is not connected to the TV. When you’ve put the dvd in the DVD/VCR player, turn the second largest round dial on the RECEIVER to the TV/SAT position (the receiver is the bottom black box – two boxes below the dvd player). When the receiver is at the TV/SAT position, anything which you hear on the TV can be heard through the surround sound also. When you’ve put the DVD into the DVD player and hit the “Play” button, go to the TV and hit the TV/VIDEO button on the top of the TV to the left, until the TV says “DVD” or you see the DVD playing.
There is a great karaoke machine usually stored in the hallway games cupboard. Use this in a similar fashion to how you plug in the X-Box. Simply plug the audio visual leads into the front of the TV. The karaoke machine then projects the image of the singers onto the TV and uses the TV’s sound system to amplify the voice of the singers. There should be two disks for the karaoke machine and two microphones.
Jacuzzi
On arriving at the house, please switch the temperature up to the max on the Jacuzzi. And add 3 tablespoons of “Shock” which is a spa chemical which helps maintain the Jacuzzi. The Shock is located in a big tub in the cupboard under the stereo to the left of the fireplace. Add 3 tablespoons of shock and run the Jacuzzi for 5 mins and it should be fine. If the Jacuzzi seems discolored at all, please add 1 cap full of chlorinate – also located in a tub under the stairs (no more than 1 cap full per week). The spa uses an ozinator to keep it clean, so you shouldn’t have any problems with it.
When using the spa, please shower prior to going in, as things like hairspray cause the spa to foam/bubble.
“The Old Crow” bar and pool/ping pong table.
The pool table converts into a ping pong table. Simply lay the ping pong boards over the pool table and then screw the nets in the middle which holds the ping pong table together. Be careful of the spiral staircase entrance when playing ping pong as it is a little close to the table. Please note: The ping pong table is not hinged… it is screwed, so do not try to fold the table, as it will break it (you need to unscrew the nets).
Please do not do any chip shots on the pool table. It is slate and very expensive to re-cover if the fabric is torn.
There is a fridge, dishwasher as well as a bar and sink in the loft for your convenience.
The Great Room Fireplace
Feel free to use the fireplace, but remember to open the flume. To open/close the flume, reach inside of the fireplace and push/pull the handle. Generally in the summer, you may as well just leave the flume open.
Heating/Air conditioning
The house has central air heating and cooling. The thermostat for the house is located next to the laundry room. Simply switch it to cool or heat and then set the temperature. For the winter, the recommended temperature is 69 degrees. For the summer, it is 65 degrees. The one room in the house which is not centrally heated or cooled in the large room above the garage. There is an air conditioner (for the summer) located above the bathroom, but it is very difficult to switch on or off (we’re working on a solution to this). Notwithstanding this, if you open the windows and put the fan on, it should be just fine and you shouldn’t need any air conditioning.
If you need heat, simply use the thermostat on the wall to switch on the base-board heating.
Great Room skylights
The skylights in the great room are operated by remote control. To switch them on, simply take the remote off the wall near the laundry room stand in the middle of the room and point it upwards. The remote should show “ALL” or “A11” and then just use the up or down arrows to open or close. If it starts raining, they should automatically close (not yet tested).
Septic Tank
All homes in the area have septic tanks. This means that nothing should be flushed down the toilet if it can’t be flushed through your body – except toilet paper. Anything else, please throw in the trash. Also, please do not use any anti-bacterial agent in the toilet as this will kill the bacteria which the septic system relies on to bio-degrade waste.
Internet Access
If ever the internet stops working, simply unplug/switch off the power to the blue linksys router and modem which are located on or behind the TV in the great room. Leave off for about 30 seconds and then plug back in. Then reboot the computer and you should be good to go.
Power Failure/Backup Generator
The house is equipped with a 15KW backup generator which is propane powered. In the winter it is not uncommon for a tree to fall on a power-line etc. If the power does fail for 15 seconds or more, the generator will automatically kick in and power selected circuits in the house. Be warned, the generator is quite noisy. You may not get much sleep, but at least you’ll be warm ;-). Power is supplied to the septic pump, water heaters, TV sockets and the power sockets near the dining table. There is an extension cord in the cupboard under the laundry room sink if you need to run a cable for a light etc. Also, if the phone doesn’t work, there is a analogue phone you can plug into the outlet. This phone is located in the high cupboard to the left of the main kitchen sink. There are torches there also.
When the power restores, the generator will automatically switch off.
Recycling
Please put all plastic and glass in one trash can and everything else in the other. The trash will be picked up every Monday.
Outside Cinema
If you would like to enjoy a movie out on the deck, all you have to do is the following:
- Plug the projector power into the power socket in the middle of the deck seating area. Next to the power socket there is an S-Video socket – plug that in also. Switch on the power.
- Take the 8ft x 6ft screen out of the garage and position it just off the deck (it’s on a tripod, so it is pretty easy to setup).
- Put the DVD in the DVD/VCR player to the left of the fireplace and hit play. Wait for about 10 seconds and the DVD will start playing through the projector.
Note: It goes without saying, if it starts raining, please bring everything in and don’t let the projector get wet. Also, when you pack the projector away, please allow to cool before putting in the case.
