Midlothian (
Meadhan Lodainn in Gaelic) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland, and a lieutenancy area. It borders onto Scottish Borders, East Lothian and the City of Edinburgh.
Before 1996 it was a district within the former Lothian Region and prior to 1975 it was a county. The county was officially known as the
County of Edinburgh until 1921 and was sometimes called
Edinburghshire during the 19th century.
