Situated less than a mile from Kirk Yetholm and just 9 miles from Kelso, in the beautiful Scottish Border country lies Greystones Barn. A stunning conversion of an old steading, it stands just a field away from the Kale Water and has a wonderful outlook across the valley to the hills on the other side. Part of a small enclave of cottages at the end of a country lane, Greystones is a little removed from the rest of them and has been cunningly designed so that none of them are visible from its windows, making you feel that you're in the middle of nowhere. Light and space are the keynotes of this cottage, as it forms two sides of a secluded courtyard and every bedroom has French doors opening on to this grassy area. So you can, if you so wish, lie in bed with the wonderful Scottish fresh air wafting over you. The living area is particularly spacious, with a very large and comfortably furnished sitting room and an equally roomy diner/kitchen. With large tables and chairs in both these rooms, you even have a choice of where you sit to eat. The well-equipped kitchen opens to a patio area with a large table and chairs, on the opposite side of the house from the courtyard. This is a wonderful place to sit and have breakfast where you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding fields and the 300 metre high Stae Rough Hill. There is plenty of parking space around the cottage, and with absolutely no traffic, it is an ideal spot for children to play while you relax. For the more adventurous, swimming in the Kale to the north of the Barn is another way to while away a summers afternoon. St Cuthbert's Way, which runs from Melrose to Lindisfarne, crosses the hill in front of the cottage. Yetholm stands at the northernmost end of the Pennine Way, leaving no shortage of good walking routes in the immediate area, and the more energetic may even want to climb the Cheviots. Fresh Water Fishing can be arranged in nearby Morebattle and there is Horse Riding at Nenthorn, just beyond Kelso. The quiet byways are excellent for cycling and there is no shortage of golf courses to enjoy. With regard to sightseeing, a week may simply not be long enough in this beautiful area. The cottage is about 35 miles from historic Berwick upon Tweed, and even less from Holy Island and Lindisfarne, where there are excellent beaches. From Kelso, you can get to Edinburgh in just over an hour. Then you have all the pretty Border towns to visit, not to mention numerous stately homes and castles. Floors Castle at Kelso, the home of the Duke of Roxburghe, is probably the closest to the Barn. Bed linen, towels, oil-fired central heating and electricity are all included in the rental. Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. An additional pull-out bed may be available at extra charge. We do not allow smoking in the cottage.
