In the quiet, upper market place there are small formal gardens which contrast with the ancient cobbled areas. Briar cottage, dating from the 18th century, is part of a small terrace which sits on the fringe of the cobbles looking over one of the gardens towards the torn ramparts of Middleham Castle. Entry at the front is to a pleasant dining room which in turn leads to both a cosy lounge with stone arched fireplace and multifuel stove, and a well equipped, fully fitted pine kitchen with slate tiled floor. Off the kitchen is a bathroom with bath, washbasin and toilet. An open stairway rises from the lounge to a landing serving three bedrooms. One bedroom has a double bed, one has twin beds and both view out towards the castle, the other has a single bed. A stable door leads from the kitchen to a shared courtyard with border gardens and a flagged area for sitting. This courtyard area can also be reached from the market place through a private alleyway, with a door, leading between the adjacent cottages. Briar Cottage has been recently renovated to reveal original features such as the wooden lintels above the windows. The use of half-glass, pine doors allows natural light to warm and brighten all the rooms. A cosy cottage, full of character, provides a high standard of accommodation.
