Once a bustling market village of Upper Wensleydale, Askrigg reflects its history with winding streets and stone flagged pavements leading to a cobbled market place with an ancient cross and dominated by a magnificent 13th century church.  It remains a lively village and is famous for the filming of the BBC TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ with the fictional house of James Herrriot.  The main street, lined by impressive terraced houses, is the beginning of several narrow side streets with yards and gardens that lead to the numerous footpaths which provide circuital routes with splendid views of the dale.  The short walks along the riverside to Bainbridge and Worton and up Mill Gill and Whitfield to see  the spectacular waterfalls are particularly recommended.
