Scotland lodge is special. In the 16th century it was a small cottage but has since been transformed into a substantial house with additions in successive centuries. In Victorian times large bay windows were added to the front, the glazier engraved his name on a pane of plate glass in 1886. Between the 1920s and 1970s it was the main house of an estate lovingly nurtured by Robert Wales, a gentleman farmer of tradition who scorned modern farming methods; the organic farmer par excellence, a true environmentalist. At his death aged over 90 (he was photographed shooting a few days earlier), the farm passed to the Nature Conservancy Council (now English Nature) for their safekeeping, and the house to us. Much of the down land had never been ploughed, providing a wealth of wild flora and fauna, which includes rare orchids. Our front garden was turfed from the Down land; there is a profusion of wild spring flowers including a multitude of cowslips. Robert Wales has left his trademark. Within the house there is a feeling of peace and tranquillity. Guests exhausted from much travelling often comment on a good night’s sleep. We try to provide a respite from the rush of life and offer comfortable surroundings. All rooms are en-suite with bath and showers. Each has a television and tea/coffee making facilities. Two rooms in the Victorian part are particularly large and airy, with comfortable chairs and ample room for relaxation. Both have a fridge, and one the added benefit of a small but fully equipped kitchen, which may be used for self-catering. Also available are a smaller double with en-suite bath and shower. Self-catering guests: Accommodation is studio style (i.e. no separate bedroom) 15’x18’ (27m sq), plus a bathroom and kitchen. Letting weeks run Friday to Friday. Saturdays are possible, but guests may have to move into a B&B room on their last Friday (at no extra charge).
