Situated at the southern end of the picturesque Woodford Valley, just before the River Avon reaches the cathedral city of Salisbury, the small village of Stratford-sub-Castle is so called because it lies beneath the fortifications of Old Sarum, "the original Salisbury" or "Sarisberie". Although only 2.5 miles from Salisbury city centre, Manor Cottage is quietly situated, away from major roads, with a peaceful outlook over the water meadows, which provide a haven for bird life on the other side of the lane. It offers good walks and cycle rides from the door and provides an excellent base for exploring not only Salisbury itself, with its ancient street plan, market place and impressive Gothic cathedral, but also the entourage of delightful villages dotted among the chalk hills of southern Wiltshire. Ancient sites and stately homes such as Stonehenge, Avebury, Wilton House, Heale House, Mompesson House and Wardour Castle are also abundant in this area.Adjacent to the owners' home, the accommodation at Manor Cottage consists of a very well equipped and tastefully furnished, self-contained wing (right hand end in exterior picture) with its own entrance at the rear (garden side) of the property.
