The Old Higher Lighthouse at Portland Bill offers Branscombe Lodge a detached self-catering cottage on two floors. Downstairs is a double and a twin bedroom, bathroom with a shower over the bath, and kitchen, all rooms have sea views. Upstairs a large sitting room with unsurpassed sea and coastal view on all four sides. The cottage is kept very clean and is fully equipped to a high standard including TV, video, microwave, washing machine, tumble drier and a full size cooker. All power is electric and operated by a £1 coin meter.Outside there are large ornamental gardens with use of BBQ and garden furniture. A seasonal outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi is also available. Guests have access to the short lighthouse tower and its sunlounge/observatory, which houses a gunsight binocular for superb viewing in all directions. Beautiful sunsets can be enjoyed while sipping a beverage of choice.The Royal Manor of Portland, which is, part of the Jurassic coastline and has many sources of interest with it’s raised beach and the famous Chesil Bank, Portland stone quarrying, from which much of London is built, and the sculpture park open to the public. Portland castle built by Henry VIII is well worth a visit. This names just a few of the interesting places on Portland. Outdoor activities include walking, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, bird watching, swimming, abseiling, diving, cliff climbing, stone sculpting and horse riding. Weymouth is 10 miles away with its glorious sandy beach and typical seaside attractions.The Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1906 when it was superseded by the currently used red and white one. It has many claims to fame and was once the home of doctor Marie Stopes (pioneer of birth control). During that time it was visited by George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Hardy, H G Wells and Margot Fontayn (ballerina as she was then).
