Acquired by us in December 1998, this lovely Grade 2 listed cottage is located in the village conservation area and is ideally suited for exploring the many delights of the Cornish coast and countryside.  During the winter of 1999/2000, major improvements were carried out both internally and externally.

The cottage comprises a living room with TV, Video and DVD player,  kitchen/dining room, three bedrooms, one double with TV, one twin with en-suite shower room and a third with full-size bunk beds.  The family bathroom has WC, basin and bath/shower.  The fitted kitchen is fully equipped with an electric cooker, 'fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave and toaster.  This cottage also has full oil-fired central heating and a multi-fuel stove in the open living room fireplace.  There is a garden with picnic benches and chairs, and a parking space.  There is also a travel cot and high chair.

Location and History

Some four miles from Newquay centre, the cottage is located in the heart of the village, beside the church and approximately six hundred yards from Crantock beach.

There has been a church on this site since the twelfth century or earlier and the present building contains a beautiful rood screen.  There is an ancient stone coffin in the churchyard and behind the church the old village stocks can be found. The village also contains some pretty thatched cottages, including the famous Old Albion Inn.

The full history of Lanherne cottage and neighbouring Church Cottages is not known but we understand they have had many different uses over the years, including a schoolhouse and a poorhouse.  The most well-known fact locally is that they were once a bake house for the monastery which stood on or near the site of the church.  There is an old bread oven still to be seen in the fireplace in Lanherne's living room. It is also true (and I can vouch for this myself) that the smell of freshly baking bread could often be detected late at night!  A former tenant of Lanherne Cottage remembered being woken up by the smell.  She went downstairs to investigate and found that her oven, although switched off, was warm, despite the fact that she hadn't used it that day!

There is a small general store in the village, which also contains a Post Office.  Alternatively, Morrisons have a large supermarket on the edge of Newquay about three miles away.
