The historical City of Chichester has retained it's unique charm and provides an oasis of calm and tranquility for visitors and the opportunity to 'step back' and unwind. The hub of the City is the City Cross where, rather like the clock on Waterloo Station, friends always arrange to meet and from where the main streets, named after the points of the compass, focus on The Cross. Many main chain shops can be found in East, South and North Street. There are also numerous individual shops and restaurants within and close to the centre. A City guided walk is available throughout the summer. The world famous Chichester Festival Theatre is situated in Oaklands Park on the outer boundary of the City, being just one mile from Oak Apple Barn. There are two theatres on site. Our main 'Season' is from April to October. A little further afield, but easily accessible from Chichester, are numerous attractions, including Goodwood (3 miles north east of Chichester) where in addition to the House itself, the racecourse and motor racing circuit are worth visiting. The Festival of Speed and Revival Motor Racing Meeting take place during the Summer and Fall. Chichester Canal runs from the sea, right into the Centre of Chichester. It is in the process of being gradually renovated and trips are available from the Canal Basin. West Dean Gardens and House (4 miles north of Chichester) famous for their gardens and arboretum; monthly features in Country Living Magazine. Weald and Downland Museum, Singleton (5 miles north east of Chichester) where reconstructed buildings, dating from medieval period, are set in beautiful countryside. Chichester Harbour - a vast area of salt water marshes and creeks. A range of guided walks are available throughout the year. A harbour water tour is particularly wonderful on summer evenings and is available from Itchenor. West Wittering (7 miles south of Chichester) is the most attractive and closest seaside location in Chichester, particularly a sand spit called East Head (A National Trust Area). Fishbourne Roman Palace (2 miles west of Chichester) sumptuous home of King Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus, houses the UK's largest collection of mosaics, including the beautiful 'Cupid on a Dolphin'.
