Weeping Willow House is situated in the small country village of Shiplake, 2 miles from Henley on Thames and within the Thames Valley and Chiltern Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Shiplake train station is a mere 400 metres away where trains regularly depart for Henley on Thames (4 mins), Twyford (8 mins), Reading (21 mins) and London (45 mins on the fast train or an hour on the slower trains). Shiplake village has a shop, butcher and a couple of pubs.
Weeping Willow House has sleeping facilities for 6 people in 3 bedrooms, or 8 people if 2 people sleep on the double sofa bed in the lounge. The 3 bedrooms consist of a master bedroom (with en-suite bathroom), a double room and a twin room. A cot is also available on request.
A couple of Canadian canoes are available for hire for days of fun-filled paddling in beautiful countryside. There are also plenty of delightful walks, bike rides and country pubs nearby. Shiplake lock is a leisurely walk away where you can relax and watch the boats navigate through. A little further up the hill is the picturesque 13th century parish church of St Mary's. The Baskerville Arms is jusst 500 metres from Weeping Willow House and features in the Good Pub Guide. Various awards have been won including AA Four Stars 2009, Visit Britain Four Stars and Silver Accolade 2009.
The region has a proud tradition of sculling, punting and canoeing. The Wargrave & Shiplake Regatta is the second largest on the RiverThames after the Henley Royal Regatta and the largest punt and skiff regatta in England. It takes place on the river between Shiplake and Wargrave the August of each year. Other nearby regattas include Marlow Town, Hurley and Cookham. Boating enthusiasts can access the river at Shiplake lock or Shiplake green and small sailing boats can be seen 100 metres up the river from Shiplake green, at the location of Henley Sailing Club.
Weeping Willow House is situated on the Thames Path, the beautiful walk that attracts visitors from all over the country. The Thames Path winds its way west via Shiplake lock to the pretty village of Sonning. In Sonning you can take in dinner and a show at the mill , which has been converted into a theatre, or enjoy fine dining on the banks of the River Thames at the French Horn. The Thames Path winds east for 2 miles to Henley on Thames via fragrant meadows and the historical Marsh lock. Henley is home of the Henley Royal Regatta, the Henley Festival of Music and Arts and the Henley Food Festival. Henley also has plenty of quaint shops, restaurants and pubs to explore. It is also possible to hire canoes, enjoy a boat trip up the Thames, visit the River and Rowing Museum (home of the Wind in The Willows exhibition) or take in a play at the Kenton theatre (which is the fourth oldest in England). Henley is a short car journey or a 4 minute train journey away.
Shiplake has had residents of note, including George Orwell and Antony Worrall Thompson. Shiplake church was where Alfred Lord Tennyson got married. Day trips might include the towns of Reading (7 miles), Windsor castle (15 miles), Didcot Railway Centre (21 miles) and the university town of Oxford (22 miles). All the vibrant sights and sounds of London (41 miles, 45 mins by fast train) are also just a short journey away. All of these can be conveniently reached by train from Shiplake station via Twyford. By car you might explore the beautiful countryside with its numerous country homes, estates and National Trust properties such as: Greys Court; Stonor Park; Cliveden; Westcombe Park; and Hughenden. Golf courses are plentiful and nearby sports venues include Ascot, Newbury and Windsor racecourses.
