A delightful 16thC Grade II Listed cottage set in the centre of the medieval town of Rye near Landgate. Oakhurst Cottage itself is believed to the the servants quarters of the Manor House next door, and the original door through to the Manor House is still there although this has been long blocked up. The cottage has a wealth of beams and large inglenook fireplace with woodburning stove and original bread oven. The property sleeps 4 people with a 1st floor double bedroom up a set of steep stairs, a well fitted bathroom with Heritage air bath and shower attachment, hand basin and low level WC. A further set of steep stairs lead to the Second bedroom, furnished with 2 comfortable 3' beds. Downstairs the furnishings include a 2-seater sofa and 2 armchairs, a dining table with 4 wrought iron chairs and luxurious Malabar curtains and cushions.The galley kitchen is fitted with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge, iron and ironing board and has a door leading to a sunny courtyard garden with table and chairs. The cottage also has full gas central heating, radio/CD player, TV and a selection of books and games for your enjoyment. We accept non-smokers only, and unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets. There is some street parking outside as well as a long term car park in Rope Walk close by.The price of the cottage is fully inclusive of bed linen, towels, fuel, the 1st basket of logs and a welcome bottle of wine.Rye itself is one of the Cinque ports and grew from a small fishing community to a major trading port in the 13thC. Oakhurst Cottage was almost completely devastated by fire in the 14thC but 3 years later a town wall was built to protect Rye, of which a small section still remains in Cinque Port Street together with Landgate and Ypres Tower. In the 18thC Rye became known for its smuggling and the famous 'Hawkhurst Gang'. Rye, however, is no longer by the sea but Camber Sands and Winchelsea beach are.
