Worsley is a tranquil conservation area steeped in history. Arguably one of the major features is the Bridgewater Canal constructed to transport coal from the Duke of Bridgewater’s mines to Manchester. The canal is however only used nowadays for leisure boating and fishing. The earliest recorded settlement at Worsley was in 1195 and by the middle ages the village had a manor, fields, cottages, woodland and watermill. Worsley green is a peaceful area of common land edged by black and white half-timbered houses. Within walking distance are Roe Green and Beesley Green, also areas of common land which are picturesque peaceful havens and home to a cricket and bowling club. At the end of Broad Oak Road is Worsley woods, an area of 75 acres with many idyllic walks and a children’s play area. The M60 motorway is 2km from the Cottage giving access to Manchester airport (20 minutes) and, via other motorways, to Wales, Blackpool, the Lake District, Scotland, Birmingham and London. There are local bus services to Manchester approximately every half hour and also buses to Bolton. There are three restaurants in Worsley village and four local hostelries which serve excellent food at reasonable cost. Worsley Old Hall is now part of a large leisure complex, The Marriot, which includes a fitness club and golfcourse. There are three other golf courses within a 5km radius. Only ten minutes drive from The Cottage is the Trafford Centre which contains numerous shops and many leisure activities in a stunning mall setting.
