Smithy Cottage as its name suggests was once the home of the village blacksmith. The old smithy is still attached to the cottage.
The cottage stands in its own garden beside the beck.There is parking space for two cars. There are three bedrooms upstairs, one double, one twin and one single bedroom, also a bathroom with shower.
Downstairs there is a dining room and lounge, both with open fires, a kitchen, walk-in larder and bathroom plus shower. The cottage has oil fired central heating throughout.
There is television, radio and telephone in the living room and electric cooker, fridge, microwave oven, and washing machine in the kitchen. Outside in the old smithy is a tumble drier and a deep freeze to cater for those with special dietary needs who may wish to bring their own supply of food.
All linen is included together with oil for the central heating and coal for the open fire. The electricity and telephone charges are calculated by meter reading. In the lounge there is a colour television and video. A high chair is provided.

Skirwith Hall is a large dairy farm east of Penrith in the shadow of Crossfell, the highest peak in the Pennine Range. Both cottages are comfortable and well equipped whilst retaining their individual character. Each cottage has a riverside garden. Located 7 miles from junction 40 of M6 it is an ideal base for touring the Lakes and Pennine Dales, visiting Hadrian's Wall or simply relaxing in idyllic rural surroundings. Good golf, riding and fishing within reasonable distance. Carlisle-Settle railway 2 miles away at Langwathby.
There are good eating place close by a Melmerby,Ousby, Langwathby, Edenhall and Great Salkeld. Eden Ostrich World Open Farm at Langwathby.Alston, highest market town in England and one time centre of a flourishing lead mining industry,only 13 miles away Own transport recommended but car our bicycle hire could be arrange.
Smithy Cottage has three bedrooms and two bathrooms making it ideal for two couples or a family.Skirwith Hall Cottage is only available until April. It will accommodate up to eight people but is ideal for four who want a room each and I have let it to couples in the past with rates suitably reduced.

Local Attractions
Skirwith is located in a very convenient spot from which to discover not just the Eden Valley, but the Lake Distict, the Pennines and Yorkshire Dales. Hadrian's Wall is about 40 minutes drive away.
Skirwith Hall is a 400 acre dairy and beef farm on the outskirts of Skirwith Village in the shadow of Crossfell, highest mountain in the Pennine range.
The Briggle Beck runs through the farmland making it an ideal habitat for herons, kingfishers and many varieties of wild birds and animals.
Visitors are free to walk over the farmland and in the woods which border the beck. They may also visit the animals and the Wilson family are happy to explain any of the farming operations you may see during your stay.
Skirwith has no shop but Langwathby, two and a half miles away has an excellent general store and post office, a café and an open farm with a tea room and gift shop (Eden Ostrich World).
The pubs at Langwathby and Melmerby (three and a half miles) and Culgaith (two miles) provide good menus, as does the Fox Inn at Ousby. Penrith is only eight miles away, as is the M6 motorway (Junction 40).
There is an excellent Organic Restaurant at the Village Bakery in Melmerby, and the nearby Shepherd's Inn is Egon Ronay recommended. The Watermill at Little Salkeld has a tea room using mainly organic produce, and mill shop. They also have one day baking courses - for adults and children.
Whilst in Culgaith you can browse in the little antique shop, visit the garden centre and tea rooms or go to historic Acorn Bank, one time home of the Knights Templar and nowadays known for its extensive herb garden.
Appleby with its historic castle is only ten miles away and in June you can see the largest gathering of Gypsies in the country at the traditional Appleby fair. The Carlisle to Settle railway has a station at Langwathby if you would like a day out without your car or take a leisurely ride in style on a Classic vintage coach up to Hawes in the Dales.
Alston, highest market town in England is thirteen miles away, providing an opportunity to visit Hartside Nursery Gardens on the way or continue to Nenthead with its lead mining Heritage Centre. Other attractions are Wetheriggs Pottery, Lacey's Cave and the prehistoric stone circle - Long Meg and her daughters.
Locally there is excellent fishing and walking, and activities like golf, riding, cycling are available nearby. There are scenic golf courses at Alston, Appleby and Penrith where there is also a golf driving range. - Of course you may wish simply to relax and unwind.
Skirwith Hall Cottages are in an ideal location for touring not only the Eden Valley, but also the Lake District. Ullswater is 20 minutes away, Keswick is 30 minutes away and Windermere can be reached in 45 minutes.
