Nibthwaite, a peaceful and picturesque hamlet only 1½ miles from the southern tip of Coniston Water, was part of the many farming enterprises set up in the 12th Century by the Cistercian Monks of Furness, which became the second richest Cistercian House in England. Thereafter, it became a private estate, although some houses in the hamlet are in separate ownership. The back of Nibthwaite Grange, with its small panelled rooms, is the original part of the old lakeland manor.

In 1837 the front part of the house (a Grade 2 Regency villa) was blistered onto the original manor house. The architects were the Webster family of Kendal, who were responsible for many fine houses in the region, including Holker Hall. The owner's wife, Lord Cavendish's sister, was brought up at Holker Hall, which is world famous for its grand architecture, furnishings and fabulous gardens. The grouse moor which is part of Holker is visible from the grounds of Nibthwaite Grange.
