Sightseeing You don't have to go far:
The scenic Lancaster to Kendal canal is only 100 metres away. The navigable section has a footpath and during the summer, narrow-boat trips acan be taken from Crooklands.
The countryside around Millness is mainly quiet and unspoilt and in minutes, you can be in the middle of nowhere. The area is a typical farming community and more often than not, farm tractors are the only things you'll see on the narrow lanes.
Crooklands is just half a mile away on the main A65 road to Kendal. This small community of houses and farms also has a popular bar, restaurant and farm shop which sells locally-produced food. Just over a mile from Millness, the village of Endmoor has an excellent shop, post office, bakery and public house. Farleton Knott, the imposing hill to the South West of Millness, beyond the M6 embankment, can be climbed in half-an-hour or so. The summit has a spectacular limestone pavement and on a clear day, Blackpool Tower can be seen.
To the North:
- Lake Windermere, Rydal Water and Grasmere are 30-40 minutes away by car with Coniston Water a little further to the West.
- Kendal is an excellent shopping centre with numerous hostelries, restaurants and popular amenities. This well-known gateway to the Lakes is about 7 miles from Millness. On the outskirts of Kendal, West Coast main line trains stop at Oxenholme Station.
To the South:
- The popular holiday resort, Morecambe, is renowned for its shrimps. Guided walks across the sands of Morecambe Bay are available at certain times. The resort has all the usual attractions and facilities of a typical seaside town.
To the East:
- In half-an-hour you can be exploring the traditional town of Sedbergh and the Yorkshire Dales. Get some real Wensleydale cheese, or visit the cobbled streets of Dent and see the spectacular stone viaducts of the Settle to Carlisle railway.
- Kirkby Lonsdale is an attractive small town with excellent facilities. A few more miles down the A65, see Ingleton's famous caves.
To the West:
- The nearest local town Milnthorpe, has a small but convenient selection of shops and a lively community. The small seaside village, Sandside, on the shores of Morecambe Bay, is a short distance away from Milnthorpe.
- From Milnthorpe, take the A6 to Levens and visit the famous topiary gardens of Levens Hall. When leaving the hall, take the A595 to Grange-over-Sands, a sedate seaside town on the shores of Morecambe Bay, from where walks across the bay commence. Ulverston is known as the home of Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame and a few more miles to the west, the town of Barrow has good facilities and shopping.
- The little-known Cumbrian West Coast has many long sandy beaches and villages such as Silecroft are well worth visiting.
