The Pottery

1 Bedroom    1 Bathroom    Sleeps 4    Children Welcome    No Pets    No Smoking

The Long Mynd plateau rises to the west of the Pottery and the setting sun throws a beautiful light onto the Lawley and Caer Caradoc hills which stand across the valley to the east. There are many walks direct from the front door. The village shop and Post Office are half a mile away, as is the pub, the Yew Tree, serving real ale and good standard food Further away is the county town of Shrewsbury (11 miles) with its collection of timber framed houses and Market Hall, Wenlock Edge and the market town of Much Wenlock (8 miles), and Ludlow (15 miles) with its reputation for gourmet eating. A deed of sale from 1864 refers to a cottage, cow house and outbuilding on the site: the cow house has long since gone but we believe the outhouse was used to stable a horse and trap into the early 20th century. We then have an information gap but we know the site was used for egg production during WW2. We bought the the house and outbuilding in 1994: the latter’s last use, 8 years before, had been as a pottery, with a design studio above. It was in very poor condition but retained the oil fired kiln which were eventually able to gift to a local Potter. Because the building was deteriorating we decided to rescue it and turn it into a usable space. We worked with an architect from the Greenwood Trust in Bridgnorth, together with a builder known to them, and managed to create a sound, eco friendly design within the limitations of the existing structure and current building regulations. The timber, Douglas Fir and French Chestnut, is from sustainable sources, the paints and varnishes are non chemical, ecologically friendly products and the kitchen work top is made from recycled yoghurt pots! Electricity is supplied by Ecotricity and the hot water, to both the Pottery and main house, is provided by solar panels, weather permitting!
