Silverstone Farm is a couple of miles from North Elmham, mid-way between Fakenham and Dereham, a typical mid-Norfolk village of flint cottages and rural charm of times gone by which was once the capital of Norfolk. It has a good village shop, a pub and a bakery, so guests in The Engine House can buy all their basics without venturing further afield if they wish to take things easy. The village contains the ruins of a stone Saxon Cathedral, protected by English Heritage. The first building on the site was the first cathedral of East Anglia until 1071 when the diocesan headquarters moved to Thetford and thence to Norwich. The market town of Dereham is five miles away with a wider range of shops and one of the most interesting churches in Norfolk, a county famed for its churches, both in their number and history. The splendid North Norfolk coast is only 20 minutes from The Engine House at Wells-next-the-Sea, with Holkham, Brancaster, Hunstanton and Cromer all easily accessible.
The Engine House is peacefully set behind the farmhouse and Norfolk barns of Silverstone Farm – no longer a working farm, but the home of a talented designer, one of whose specialities is designing garden layouts, including his own! It has been imaginatively and very stylishly converted, (for first availability in January 2006) in a neo-classical style, into a single storey flint and brick cottage.
The long, wide and light entrance hall links all rooms in the cottage: a double and a compact twin bedroom, both with open plan en suite shower-rooms, WC and WB, an elegant sitting room, kitchen with dining table, dishwasher, fridge, electric cooker and microwave and a good sized utility room with washing machine, beyond which is a further separate cloakroom/WC. The Engine House has a tiled floor throughout, with underfloor central heating. The cottage contains many interesting artefacts and designer furniture and the walls are backdrop to a fascinating collection of pictures and photographs. Outside: double doors from the kitchen lead to a paved sitting-out terrace. Covered parking.
