Dougarie Holiday Cottages are on the Dougarie Estate a sporting estate occupying the northwest quarter of the island. From most parts of the estate you enjoy superb views across the Kilbrannan Sound to Kintyre and of the surrounding hills.
All of the cottages, loosely grouped within a mile and a half of Dougarie Lodge, are in completely rural surroundings. For those who like walking there are miles of paths to follow, fascinating bird life to observe, and there is always a chance of seeing red deer in their native habitat. You are also never far from the shore with fine sands and interesting beaches, where you can explore the rock pools. You can fish in the sea for cod and mackerel. Or you can fish for sea trout and salmon on the river Iorsa (by application to the Estate Office). Only a mile away there is a 9-hole golf course, tennis court, and boats for hire. The nearest shops are at Blackwaterfoot (4 miles) where you can get all of the essentials, though the bread and fruit/fish vans will call on request. The main shopping centre is Brodick, which is 10 miles away. At Blackwaterfoot more sporting facilities are available, such as a 12-hole links, tennis courts, bowling green and pony trekking centre; and at the Kinloch Hotel there is a heated swimming pool, squash court and sauna.
Stone-built in the traditional manner about 100 years ago, our cottages were formerly used as farmhouses or by people working on the Estate. Since then they have been transformed into fully equipped, comfortable holiday homes. They are all well-furnished (including colour TV) and they have fitted carpets in the sitting room and bedrooms. They also have a fireplace in the sitting room that is suitable for burning wood or coal. Main heating is by electricity with heaters in each room and immersion heaters for hot water. Each cottage is equipped with an electric cooker, fridge, washing machine and tumble dryer. Other appliances include electric kettles and toasters.
