Ballivicar Farm is a small family farm, with cows, sheep, pigs and horses (chickens, ducks, dogs, cats and so on), run on traditional, enviromentally friendly lines. We also have pony-trekking and carriage riding (behind a Clydesdale) available on site! The farm is situated close to, but quite separate from Port Ellen, it is within 15 minutes of Islay's principal ferry port, airport and its only golf course. The three most distinctive of Islay's six functioning distilleries are also within easy reach. The sea and empty beaches are, of course, ubiquitous on the island, which is, in many ways, locked in a time-warp (you rarely need to lock your car, or your flat). Wildlife, rare on the mainland, is part of everyday life, barn owls nest in the farm buildings, there are swallows everywhere (and bats), and since nothing is shot on the farm, pheasants, hares, roe deer (and some red) and rabbits abound. Buzzards are commonplace, hen harriers and peregrines are also part of everyday life. In the winter there are geese, Greenland white-fronts and barnacles in large numbers. History surrounds the farm and island from iron-age forts, standing stones, deserted townships and celtic crosses, all within easy reach. But above all, Islay (and Ballivicar) is a healing place, a quiet, peaceful, un-polluted respite from an overcrowded world, 'remote', but in fact not remote at all, just a well-kept secret. Ballivicar has three apartments: The Chougherie, The Hayloft and The Bothy The Chougherie has two bedrooms (one double bed and one twin), lounge/living area, open plan kitchen and separate bathroom. Tariff: £270 per week April – end September. £35 per night October to end March (three nights minimum) The Hayloft has one bedroom (twin beds), large living area, open plan kitchen and en-suite bathroom. Tariff: £235 per week, April – end September, £25 per night October – end March (three nights minimum). The Bothy has one bedroom (twin beds), living area, open plan kitchen and en-suite bathroom. Tariff: £200 per week April – end September, £25 per night October – end March (three nights minimum). £30 deposit will secure a booking. Full week's rate will be charged on cancellations within one week of arrival, unless apartment can be re-let. Extra beds available in The Chougherie and The Hayloft by arrangement. Well behaved dogs are welcome. All properties are centrally heated. Ballivicar Farm Pony Trekking The Centre is able to tailor rides to the riders' ability, from the youngest of riders to the most experienced. Prices are kind to the pocket and all riders receive individual attention from Centre staff. The length of rides are from one to two hours responding to riders' expertise and horses' fitness.
