Local Activities

For the watersport enthusiast there is excellent surfing and windsurfing at Machrihanish. There are some great scuba diving sites all around the peninsula and the islands, with compressed air available in Campbeltown. There are also some wonderful white sandy beaches with crystal clear waters for those wishing a more relaxing time exploring rock pools or just laying on the beach.

Sunset over Jura

Golf can be found at Tarbert, Machrihanish and Southend where it is possible to play on some of the best links in the country, but be warned it is normally very busy during the summer.

The archaeology of the area is very interesting, with a Heritage Centre in Campbeltown and the famous Kilmartin Centre just over one hours drive away towards Oban.

If you are lucky you might spot golden eagles, otters and dolphins. Buzzards are almost as common as sparrows here! If all else fails, there are always the Crubasdale cats and chickens!

Pony trekking is available at several locations in Kintyre.

For those interested in gardens the Kintyre peninsula offers a mild climate and consequently there are some well known gardens within a reasonable distance. Crubasdale Lodge is currently reclaiming their garden from the wild (or - fighting the bracken!) a potentially varied garden complex, so you may be interested in seeing a garden in the making. There will also be plants for sale, depending on the season.

Sunset over Cara

There are many craft workshops in the area to suit most tastes and Crubasdale Crafts offers craft tuition to suit the individual or groups. You could try your hand at bobbin lace, wool spinning, or felt making, something different to do if the weather is inclement.

There are some good places to eat out, along the whole length of the peninsula, from the very reasonable to the very expensive. The nearest restaurants are within 5 miles of the village. The Argyll Hotel and Hunting Lodge Hotel at Bellochantuy to the south with great views and sunsets over the islands, and the MacDonald Arms at Tayinloan to the north, all with menus to suit most tastes. During the summer they serve lunches, teas and evening meals.
