21 CORDINER'S LAND is a delightful 2 Bedroom Four Star apartment, with superb Castle views, in a most desirable location! It is within the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town World Heritage Site, just below the Castle, in the historic West Port (the ancient "Flodden Wall" gateway to the Old Town), off the Grassmarket. The main tourist attractions are only a few minutes’ walk away. Sightseeing is very easy for Edinburgh Castle & The Royal Mile; Princes Street with its lovely Gardens and of course the Grassmarket. This apartment is also very convenient for business travellers, with The Edinburgh International Conference Centre being only a 5 minute walk away, and Scottish Widows, Standard Life, and some major banks all having their Headquarters close by. There is a good range of galleries, theatres, museums and cinemas in the immediate vicinity. It is also easy to visit the pubs, clubs, shops and richly varied restaurants featured throughout Edinburgh. Attending events at the major theatres in this area, such as The Usher Hall, the Lyceum, The Traverse and The King's is a delight! If you want to stay right in the centre of Edinburgh, in an Old Town historic location, then this apartment will be an ideal choice. It is a pleasant easy walk to all these attractions. THE AREA: The Grassmarket has many famous literary connections, but is also associated with some very gruesome activities which took place in ancient times, such as the public executions held at the east end of the Grassmarket. Historically, the West Port was the Western Gateway through the Flodden Wall, providing access into the fortified city of Edinburgh. It is also where the notorious murderers Burke and Hare conducted their nocturnal activities! These days though, the Grassmarket is a popularly fashionable area, which offers a wide variety of interests for tourists including specialty shops (try the wonderful cheese shop Mellis), antiquarian bookshops, antiquarian map shops, fashion, antiques, bric-a-brac and an abundant choice of dining, from sidewalk cafes and pubs to formal Scottish restaurants, all enhancing enjoyment of the long Scottish twilights. Enjoy this marvellous area by exploring the shops, closes and wynds, and then relax for a while at one of the many sidewalk tables, where you can dine upon a selection of foods whilst watching the passers-by. All the while, you will be aware of the presence of Edinburgh Castle which dominates the area. During Edinburgh's famous festivals period in August this area is thronging with people and abuzz with activities and events at the many nearby venues. Edinburgh is a great place to visit at any time of year! THE APARTMENT: 21 Cordiner’s Land is a unique apartment with important historic connections. It has recently been refurbished in a style and standard to suit travellers wanting somewhere special to stay. It provides flexible accommodation for 1-5 guests, being very comfortable for families, a couple or single travellers. All linens and towels are provided. The property has been renovated to exacting standards, maintaining a tastefully modern decorative style throughout, and providing a welcoming 'home away from home' atmosphere. THE POSITION: This third floor apartment is located in the rear section of Cordiner’s Land. It has the added attraction of being away from the noise of the city’s activities. It enjoys tranquility and a secluded ambiance, with a very impressive outlook over the surrounding area and the Cordiner’s Land private terraced courtyard gardens. THE BUILDING: Cordiner's Land is an historic Listed Building, of importance to Scotland’s national heritage. There is an ancient reinstated stone, above the street front door, which is the emblem of the Cordiners (who were shoemakers and cobblers). As far as is known, this is one of only 2 remaining Cordiner’s Emblems! There is an inscription dating from 1696. The inscription reads ‘Behold How Good A Thing It Is, And How Becoming Well, Together Such As Bretheren Are, In Unity To Dwell’. Access to the building is via a security entry system at 70 West Port, and secluded away to the rear of the building are flights of external stairs and balcony walkways leading to the gardens and the modernised individual properties. TRANSPORT: Guests staying in this apartment will not need a car for transport within the city centre, as everything is within easy walking distance and Edinburgh has an excellent public transport system. Buses and taxis pass the front door if you want to travel outwith the city centre .. or want to rest your legs after a long day sightseeing! However, if you need to bring a vehicle with you, conveniently located major city centre car parks are close to Cordiner’s Land. Between 1 Oct-31 May, we may rent this property at a lower rate than quoted on this webpage as a ‘One-Bedroom Apartment’, ie the second bedroom is closed off and would not be used during the stay.
