We provide a welcome basket of snacks, and offer a service to buy in up to 15 food items to get you through the first day or so, and can have a hot meal ready for your arrival. The situation is quite exceptional; the view from the main rooms is just idyllic, overlooking a medieval packhorse bridge and ford, with the murmur of the Wellow Brook, and fields and hills beyond. Wellow is a small community that values an old-world, informal environment with no street lighting. There is trail horse riding and ponies for children. St. Julians is a fine 14th century church. The Fox & Badger offers good bar meals (occasional quizzes/bowls). The village shop has good wines, cheeses and local fare. Wellow is off the main roads, a tranquil haven, well placed for easy access to Bath, Bristol and the surrounding beautiful countryside. Bath is a world-renowned spa town, with Roman baths, a fine abbey, Georgian architecture, Regency crescents and squares, museums, art galleries, antique shops, theatres and international music, literature and fringe festivals. Shopping is excellent, with unusual shops and a farmers' market and excellent restaurants. All of this is walkable within a square mile in the centre of the city, served by a convenient 'park & ride' 2½ miles from Wellow. Bus service from Wellow to Bath. The area offers opportunities for walks or picnics by stream or wood and is good for bird watching and cycling. You can see small deer and occasionally a badger, buzzards and herons. Horseback riding is available at the nearby Wellow Stables and a mile walk takes you to the 5,500 year-old Stoney Littleton megalithic long-barrow, one of the best preserved in the country. For children there are safe paddling in the stream, playing "Pooh Sticks" from the bridge and an adventure playground in Bath. The river Avon offers boat trips and the Kennet & Avon Canal is easy for level walking or cycling through varied countryside. Wellow is a good centre for exploring the region. To the south are Wells (fine cathedral town) - 30 minutes drive; Glastonbury (medieval abbey & Tor) - 45 mins.; Mendips & Cheddar (gorge and famous caves) - 30 mins.; Quantock Hills & Exmoor - 60 mins.; Devon Coast - 60 mins.The conservatory is popular as a second living room, receiving sun from breakfast to sunset, its double glazing and radiators giving winter warmth. French doors open out to the patio, equipped with table & chairs for outdoor meals, lounging chairs and a barbeque; access also to a large lawn. The murmur of the Wellow Brook close by provides a relaxing backdrop.
