The Old Higher Lighthouse was rebuilt in 1869 and stands at the centre of the World Heritage Coastline and is part of the Jurassic coast. At the time of the lighthouse being rebuilt, Branscombe Lodge was built as a store for the paraffin, to fuel the light. It was restored in 1996 and tastefully altered to add a second floor. This now serves as an upstairs sitting room of good size, with windows on all four sides all having superb sea and coastal views. The room is comfortably furnished and has TV and video recorder/player. Downstairs there is a twin bedroom and one double bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. All rooms have sea views. The kitchen is fully equipped with a full size electric cooker, microwave, washing machine and tumble dryer. The bathroom has WC, hand basin and bath with shower over.Hot water and heating are supplied by means of ‘off peak’ electricity, operated by £1 coin meter. The cottage is very cosy and warm with double-glazing and efficient heating throughout. When the sea is at its roughest and the wind is blowing gale force the elements can be observed and enjoyed while staying in the warm and without stepping outside. It’s a bit like being on board a boat without the motion! The cottage is set in ornamental gardens with a sheltered area for outdoor enjoyment and eating. There is an open-air swimming pool and Jacuzzi both heated but seasonal. Guests have access to the top of the lighthouse tower observatory with its 360-degree views towards land, along the coast and out to sea. A gun sight binocular in the tower observatory affords great magnification for distant viewing of shipping or you can just sit and enjoy the fabulous sunsets. The area is quiet and peaceful with no passing traffic.Access to the property is by a private road terminating at the Lighthouse with parking immediately outside the kitchen window on the driveway to the cottage.
