In a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just north of Axminster in south east Devon, Trout Lodge has 600 yards of private fishing on its own stretch of river, 400 yards of which are double banked. There are wild brown trout, sea trout and, if you are very lucky and catch a run, salmon. The stretch of river includes a beautiful weir with a deep holding pool beneath it, a salmon ladder and several smaller pools where fish like to hide. You get to the opposite bank by paddling through the river, so bring wellies….. Trout Lodge is on its own island. Cross over the bridge, shut the gate, and you enter your own little kingdom. There is ample room for parking several cars and the terrace and lawn areas are fenced to deter dogs and/or children from escaping The river flows just below the terrace and the mill race runs by the kitchen window. Trout Lodge sleeps 6. Downstairs is an entrance hall, rod room, utility room, WC, huge dining room/family room, even larger sitting room, and a very well equipped kitchen. There are french doors onto an enormous terrace, with the river flowing in front of the cottage. The sitting room has a comforting electric wood burner effect stove in the stone fireplace and squashy leather sofas. There is also TV, video, DVD, radio & CD player. The 3 bedrooms each have their own staircases. Bedroom 1 (the blue room) has twin beds with a family bathroom and WC across the landing; Bedroom 2 (the nest) has a double bed and en suite shower and WC. Bedroom 3 (the hideaway) is a twin bedded room with french windows and en suite shower and WC. All the bedrooms have TVs and radios. Axminster itself is a pretty little market town centred round a 12thC church with local shops as well as a couple of supermarkets. There are several pubs in the area serving good food and local beers. The Jurassic Coast is a short drive away, as are several golf courses and good beaches. Exmoor and Dartmoor, Devon's famous national parks, can be easily visited in a day.
