Watermouth Cove Cottages, Watermouth, North Devon

The eight pretty cottages are set in tranquil grounds in a secluded valley adjacent to 150-year old Watermouth Castle just 200 yards from the sea. They are located half way between Combe Martin and Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast.

They comprise the former coach house and stables of the castle, enclosed in their own courtyard, with a beautiful garden at the rear. Watermouth Cove Cottages provide self-contained, comfortable and well-equipped self-catering holiday homes.


The cottages all feature full cooking facilities with ample crockery, fridge [Smugglers Cove has a fridge/freezer] and immensely labour-saving microwaves and dishwashers. There is a laundry room on site with free use of washing machine and 50p for tumble dryer, and a public payphone. Each cottage has a colour television in the lounge.

The cottages offer accommodation from two up to eight people. Large groups of up to 42 people can be accommodated, ideal for that family reunion or for special events.

For animal lovers, the garden  at Watermouth Cove Cottages is visited by foxes, rabbits, woodpeckers and jays, together with hundreds of garden birds. Badgers have also been seen late at night. The nearby lake has a multitude of ducks which visit the cottages regularly. Well behaved pets are welcome at Watermouth Cove Cottages and the area is rich in footpaths and trails.

Smugglers Cove Cottage
Large ground floor cottage, spacious, attractive lounge with log fire, colour TV and lovely views of the castle and lake. Smugglers Cove is our largest cottage. Four poster bedroom and two twin bedded rooms plus double bed settee. Separate fully fitted kitchen with cooker, microwave, dishwasher and fridge/freezer etc. and spacious dining area. Basket of logs provided on arrival. Bathroom with electric shower and separate WC. Has separate entrance porch with own patio and barbecue.

Seaspray
Ground floor cottage with four poster bedroom, one twin bedded room and one bunk bedded room. Fully fitted kitchen/dining area with cooker, microwave, dishwasher etc. with divided lounge area and colour TV. Bathroom/WC. Lounge has wooden panelling. Seaspray has a south-facing pretty bay window with seating which overlooks the sunny courtyard and its own patio and barbecue..

Driftwood
Ground floor cottage. Lounge area with colour TV and double bed settee, with divided dining area complete with fully fitted kitchen, cooker, dishwasher, microwave, etc. Bathroom with electric MIRA shower, WC. Four poster bedroom and one twin bedded room. The twin room is ideal for anyone who has difficulty walking. People (and luggage!) can be offloaded at the door itself. Pretty bay window overlooking courtyard with own patio and barbecue.
Sleeps 4/6. [Twin beds are 2'6" and can be configured as a king size double.]

Seashell
Attractive ground floor cottage with French doors leading out onto the garden with own patio and barbecue.
The lounge/kitchen area has rustic wooden panelling and other features from its origins as part of the stables.
Lounge area with colour TV and log fire for warm, cozy evenings.

Seashell and Driftwood have an adjoining door and can be used as one cottage sleeping up to ten.

Seadrift
Detached two bedroom ground floor cottage with large arched doors leading out onto the garden and own patio and barbecue. Originally part of the stables, it has beamed ceilings and exposed brickwork - rustic and romantic! Four poster bedroom and one bunk bedded room. Bathroom with shower, WC. Lounge area with log fire, colour TV. Dining area with fully fitted kitchen, cooker, dishwasher, microwave. Basket of logs provided on arrival.

Sandpiper - ideal for people with limited mobility
Lounge area with colour TV and log fire - one welcome basket of logs on arrival. Fully fitted kitchen/dining area with cooker, microwave, dishwasher etc. Newly fitted shower unit with electric MIRA shower, WC. Four poster bedroom with one twin bedded room and one bunk bedded room. There is a beautiful feature, a carved wooden divider between the kitchen and lounge, which originated from the old stables. There are no steps in the cottage, just a small threshold and the door is only a few paces from where you can park your car. This makes it ideal for anyone who has difficulty walking or managing stairs. Sandpiper is located above Driftwood.

Tidesreach
A first floor cottage with a double divan bed and one bunk bedded room. Fully fitted kitchen/dining area with cooker, microwave, dishwasher etc. Lounge area with colour TV and logfire - one welcome basket of logs on arrival. Bathroom with shower and WC. The lounge has a double aspect with views towards the castle and lake.

Beachcomber
A first floor cottage with fully fitted kitchen/dining area with cooker, microwave, dishwasher etc. Lounge area with colour TV and log fire - one welcome basket of logs on arrival. Bathroom with shower, WC. The lounge has exposed beams and double aspect windows looking onto the courtyard and woodland beyond. Four poster bedroom and one twin bedded room. Beachcomber looks out over the courtyard and woodland beyond.
Sleeps 4.

Tidesreach and Beachcomber are next to each other and may be used together to sleep up to eight.

In the garden are two beautiful patio areas with barbecues, for guests staying in Tidesreach, Beachcomber and Sandpiper..

An outdoor ‘hot-tub Jacuzzi’ in the garden is an unusual and very popular feature of the cottages. Do bring your swimsuits! Jacuzzi is not available during the low season

Electricity is £1 coin meters - the night storage heaters are free

Well behaved pets are welcome - guests are kindly asked to use pooper scoops to keep this beautiful area healthy and safe for children

Swimming Pool - whilst we do not have our own pool at the cottages, Watermouth Lodges on the other side of the castle have advised that they offer the use of their outdoor heated pool to diners at the Lodges [note not the indoor pool]. Their restaurant is open from Easter.

Within ten minutes walk of Watermouth Cove Cottages there is the local pub, The Old Sawmill, which offers real ales and pub grub. Watermouth Lodges, a couple of minutes walk away on the other side of the castle, provides meals and drinks during the high season, and diners may use the outdoor heated swimming pool [please note, not the indoor pool]. Watermouth Cove Yacht Club welcomes our guests to their bar on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Within five minutes drive is an excellent restaurant at the Sandy Bay Hotel, good ales and home cooked food at Ye Olde Globe in Berrynarbor. Two miles in either direction are the resorts of Combe Martin (with a CAMRA recommended pub, The Castle) and Ilfracombe with a variety of pubs and restaurants, including Chinese, Indian and Italian. Damien Hirst's restaurant opens in January 2004.

Bookings are normally from Friday to Friday, enabling visitors to avoid much of the holiday season Saturday traffic jams. See tariffs.

Out of season short weekend breaks for other periods are always available. These are extremely popular particularly by people requiring a more restful break to ‘recharge their batteries’, for example to recover from the Christmas and New Year festivities. Most of the cottages have log-burning stoves. In winter these give a lovely cozy feeling to evenings when returning from a walk along the shore.

Excellent last minute savings are sometimes possible at short notice. It is always worth phoning to see what is available with prices starting from only £99 for a booked short break.
