Pool and On-Site Facilities
There is a superb 40 ft (or 12.3m) indoor heated swimming pool, with male and female changing rooms and a hot shower, open daily. The pool is free to use, has a constant depth of 4ft (or 1.27m) and is very popular with young families. The pool is for the exclusive use of the self catering cottages at Trevalgas Farm Cottages, so you'll often find you have the whole pool to yourselves. Indeed, many of our adult visitors have arrived as non-swimmers, and having spent time in the pool (often having it to themselves), have departed as swimmers. The cottages have plenty of books to provide some holiday reading, and their is a cupboard of board games which can be borrowed in the Games room. In the Leisure Building there is a Laundry room with three automatic washing machines and two tumble driers. All cottages have irons and ironing boards. Also in the Leisure Building there is a Pay phone. About Poughill VillageTrevalgas Cottages are set in the countryside, a quarter of a mile from the centre of Poughill, which itself is just one mile northeast of Bude town centre and beaches. Poughill is a tiny picturesque village which has been the winner of the Best Kept Village award on a number of occasions. Did you know that Poughill village dates back to Doomsday Records of 1086 - (OE pochehelle)? Poughill main street
There's a pub, Post Office Stores and Church on the main street in the village, plus some lovely thatched cottages like this one. The Battle of Stamford Hill
This battle was fought on the outskirts of Poughill on 16th May 1643. Each May, on the closest weekend to the anniversary, there is a two day re-enactment of the battle, fought over the Saturday and Sunday, together with a parade through the streets of nearby Stratton village. It's well worth a visit. Poughill ChurchThe 15th century church of St. Olaf is one of the treasure houses of Cornwall, from its Norman font and wonderful collection of bench-ends (78 in all) telling the story of the Passion in remarkable detail, to the pair of immense 15th Century paintings of St. Christopher facing each other across the nave. The old Lychgates are kept in the tower and the huge Royal Coat of Arms is dated 1655, a reminder that the Headquarters of Sir Bevil Grenville, during the Civil War, was at nearby Stowe Barton. Poughill Post Office Stores
This is open every day, selling Newspapers, (which can be reserved) postcards and groceries, in additional to every day essentials you may have forgotten to bring on holiday. It also has a selection of buckets, spades, and fishing nets to keep the children occupied on the beach! The Poughill Revel and Cuckoo FairThe Poughill Revel and Cuckoo Fair takes place in the centre of the village. It is a traditional English village fete welcoming holiday makers and other visitors, with a mix of activities to try (archery, horse riding, treasure hunts, and other children's games) and plenty of homemade cakes and homegrown produce to sample. Each of the villages around Bude have similar 'Revels', each on different weeks. So you can visit similar events in the area whichever week you choose to stay at Trevalgas Farm Cottages throughout the summer. The Poughill Revel is always on the first Thursday of August. The culmination of all of these Revels is the Bude Carnival in late August, where a large procession of floats arrives in town, each carrying the May Queen and her deputies from each of the surrounding village Revels. About BudeBude's situation, close to the Devon border, makes it an ideal centre from which to explore both Cornwall and Devon. For sports enthusiasts the area offers tennis, squash, golfing, canoeing, surfing, windsurfing, rock climbing, abseiling, mountain-biking, sailing, archery, ten pin bowling and fishing. Bude's 18 hole golf course has one of the finest links in the South West. Fishermen are well catered for with coarse fishing from the Canal towpath in Bude and sea and game fishing locally. There are riding stables nearby which provide trekking along the cliff tops and beach according to season. For cycling enthusiasts the Tarka Trail in Barnstaple and the Camel Trail in Camelford both offer cycle rides on flat ground enjoying superb views - a great way to get fit and see the countryside. Just over the Devon border is the unique village of Clovelly, and the stunning craggy cliffs at Hartland. Within about half an hour's drive are other major attractions - the Arthurian centre at Tintagel, charming Boscastle, the fishing port of Padstow, and historic Launceston with it's mediaeval castle. For garden lovers Cornwall's mild climate means that there is an abundance of lovely gardens to visit. The world famous Eden Project at St Austell with it's amazing tropical biomes is only an hour's drive away. During April and May, Cornwall plays host to a garden festival with more than 70 mature gardens opening their gates. Then there are all year round gardens - from St. Michael's Mount in Mount's Bay, Trebah on the Helford River, the Lost Gardens of Heligan near Mevagissey, Trelissick near Truro, or even Tresco on the Scilly Isles. You will find it difficult to visit them all in one holiday. Once discovered families return again and again to this unspoilt and uncommercialised part of the country. We hope that we have given you a flavour of the Magic of Cornwall; now come and see for yourselves - you won't be disappointed! For More InformationVisit Property's WebsiteSpecial Features
