Two minutes walk up the road is the village pub, the Bertie Arms. This is a wonderful thatched building, with low ceilings and real log fires. The clientele are a mix of locals from the village popping in for a quick drink and visitors from further a field, making the trip for the very popular selection of meals on the menu. Stamford is famed for its classic architecture, with over 600 listed buildings built mostly of stone and topped with local Collyweston slate. The town grew to prominence as a resting point for coach travellers, being situated midway between Lodge and York on the Great North Road.
